the return of “five ideas” (Copy)

dirk and virgil working the wave

our efforts now turn to an intermedia performance, which is another big task. i want resurrect my intermedia piece “five ideas about the relation of sight and sound”, which hasn’t been performed since 2013. a daunting prospect! the work calls for multiple projections of live transformations of sound into visuals, and vice versa. it all happens in real time, and there are complex programming tasks to be mastered. the work was composed between 2008 and 2011, so it needs an extensive update, as technology doth move at breakneck speed.
the first task is refreshingly straightforward: it involves setting up the mothballed “wave", a custom-built, serpentine screen which is 11 meters long and three meters high (33’  x 10’).
refreshingly, the screen material is still lily-white, while the wave’s tubing needed some tlc by all-round handyman dirk bächli. it’s a bit of a task fitting it into five spot east’s hall, so it will have to be shortened by about 1,5m (5 ft), lest it take over the entire space. at present, the flex rooms are in use (extensive recording tests: which mic works best for which task, how good is the audio separation, etc.). once that is done, we will set the wave up for the duration until the next concerts.
